I can’t really take credit for the lovely garden in front of my house. A skilled and artistic woman named Laurie is helping me, and she she planted the flowers that look to me like fireworks. She tells me the name is allium shubertii, also known colloquially as tumbleweed onion. I just love them, and so far they are thriving. 🙂
alli
Thanks for the name. Will see if I can find it somewhere. Alliums usually come as bulbs, but haven’t seen anything like this in stores.
for Phyllis: These did come as bulbs. Wondering if they grow in your climate?
Coincidence? Yesterday I got a new flower catalog with mostly bulbs, and an a. shubertii was among them! They are appropriate for up to zone 8, which is what we are. I have not had much luck with the large purple alliums, but will give a few of these a try. It may be too late in the season, but am fatalistic about what grows here. We’ve just been through a week of 90’s weather and in spite of frequent watering everything looks droopy.
for Phyllis: Love being able to send a suggested planting your way!
