Panama 2019 Day 23: Cock Fighting

Along the dirt path to Mari’s house is this man, a relative, who sits outside with his prized fighting cocks. The cocks are on the horizontal pole mid-picture, from the left side. Good fighting cocks are valuable birds. The government has tried to suppress interest in cock fighting, a bloody sport to be sure, with razor blades affixed to the flailing cock’s feet. But cock fights are deeply ingrained in the rural culture, and betting on a series of cock fights is a reasonably cheap way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

  1. Cocktail fights are common in the rural Philippines too. Also hear the some Filipinos have clandestine cock fights in California. I never wanted to go to one. It’s not for me.

  2. for Katie: Cock fights really are quite brutal. In the Peace Corps era there were a lot of them on Sundays. Fewer now, but prized birds are still prized. This guy treats his very, very well.
