Panama 2018: Man of the Hour

There are several hundred thousand young people here waiting to see and hear the Pope, who arrives mid-week. Wondering if there is a delegation from the U.S? The atmosphere is like Woodstock.

If the pedophilia scandal may have damaged the Pope’s reputation among American Catholics, you wouldn’t know it from the enthusiasm of the young people here. They are very, very eager to see el Papa Francisco, and are going to be putting up with substantial discomfort in terms of crowding, accommodations, etc, in order to be part of this world gathering.

The Pope’s motorcade is going right past Lily’s condo building, and she is returning to the city from the villa on Wednesday to be at home so she can see.

  1. for Katie: For all the turmoil over the pedophilia scandal in the U.S. and Europe, there is no sense of that here. The tenor is “religious Woodstock”.

  2. for Katie: They do. Some of the Evangelicals here are making a fuss about the whole city being shut down to receive the Pope, but their ire is gaining no traction.
