I’ve been waiting for this — for someone else to step forward so that Dr. Blasey is not left out there hanging all alone. I strongly suspect that Brett Kavanaugh, in his apparently frequent drunken stupor as a profoundly entitled high school and college student, didn’t just sexually assault Dr. Blasey. I’m sure there are others. Now someone else has come forward, a Yale classmate who claims Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party.
As of Sunday night, Republicans are holding firm. Kavanaugh is their boy, allegations or not.
The rather sad truth is that if Republicans are successful in pushing him through, he will be Mr. Justice — despite the accusations and what they say about his legitimacy as a person to sit in judgment of anyone. I think there is no doubt, all these years on, that Clarence Thomas lied in his hearing. But we’ve had to put up with him since that debacle in 1991, and his opinion is as powerful as that of any other justice.
A lot is resting on Dr. Blasey’s shoulders. I’m cautiously hopeful, but so far there is a huge impenetrable wall of white male privilege and power arrayed against her.
