Green Lake has two beaches staffed by lifeguards, one at each end of the lake. Distance swimmers are allowed to cross the lake, although if swimming more than 50 feet offshore they’re supposed to have someone in a kayak alongside. The lake is almost 3 miles around, so it’s a hefty challenge. The water remains cold throughout the summer; serious swimmers wear wetsuits. Kids splashing around in shallow water at the beaches do not.
The beaches are open and ready, but the air temperature is not cooperating. We’re still in the 60’s. Lifeguards are on deck, wearing long sleeve shirts and making themselves busy cleaning the beach. Ducks and geese abound, so keeping the beach sanitary is a full time job. No little swimmers splashing around yet.
