Thirty six year old Serena Williams is out of the 2018 French Open due to an injury in her pec muscle. She’s scheduled for an MRI, which will tell what the rest of her season might look like.
Thirty six is old for a professional tennis player, indeed old for most professional athletes. What might have been a twinge or a tweak or a one-day “too sore to play” affair becomes a tournament-ending injury with perhaps a notable recovery period. Older bodies are less forgiving, and once injured, recovery is slower and more painstaking.
All older athletes who play on and play well are in some sense beating the odds. I hope Serena returns this season, but only her sore pec muscle knows for sure.
