Philadelphia Day 6: Lyft Driver to the Airport

I use Lyft instead of Uber; the latter kept saying my credit card was invalid, and I got tired of trying to fix it in the absence of a way to get through to a human being. So I simply canceled Uber and started using Lyft. Same idea, although Uber is in more cities, especially overseas. Lyft works well enough for me.

Some drivers are chatty, some are not. And I vary in how chatty I feel. But the guy who picked me up at the hotel and drove me to the airport began to talk about his day job: he’s a security guard in an elementary school in Camden, NJ. Camden is one of the profoundly challenged urban centers in New Jersey, ranking right up there with Newark and Paterson and Passaic. Camden is actually the worst, having a poverty rate of 35%.

He said driving Lyft as a second job is actually way easier than trying to keep 1st graders in the classroom and not running up and down the halls of the school where he works. He was a big, burley guy, and he said controlling the kids left him exhausted at the end of the day. Getting in his car in Camden and driving to Philly to work is a relief.

Betsy DeVos is Trump’ s point person for solving critical problems like this. God help us.
