Philadelphia Day 4: Curtis Institute

The Curtis Institute is one of the renowned music schools in the country. Students are admitted based on talent and potential, without regard to ability to pay. Everyone admitted — no more than 3 or 4% of those who apply annually — is on a full scholarship, although they are responsible for their own living expenses. They admit prodigy students as young as 10 or 12, and people out of range of college age, who are in their early 20’s. We had lunch with the Director, and met a talented young violinist who is a recent graduate.

We saw the old building with a gorgeous wood lobby, and the new structure where the students study, live, practice, and perform.
