A number of red states like Oklahoma and West Virginia are years into the kinds of tax cuts that were just enacted by Republicans on the federal level. The vaunted economic surge never happened, and now those states are out of money to provide for public goods like education. Teachers are striking, protesting frozen compensation, crumbling buildings, aging textbooks and other teaching aids.
Republicans are hell-bent on believing that tax cuts spur economic growth and provide additional revenue. No matter how many times it fails to happen, the ideology persists.
The evidence suggests that within a few years, unless we return Democrats to power in Congress, the situation of Oklahoma and West Virginia will be what we see nationwide.
This is Paul Ryan’s legacy.
