Happy Trails to You

This post is for my friend and regular reader Phyllis, and for anyone of our era who loved Roy and Dale.

**********

Here are the lyrics to Dale Evans’ theme song, Happy Trails to You. I’m quite intrigued by the alternate religious verse, which I’d never heard. I think both Roy and Dale were quite religious — Dale’s book about their two year old daughter who died suggested that Robin grew wings and went to live with God in heaven.

The Roy Rogers club rules are very typical of 1950’s values. Can’t imagine a list like this holding sway now.

Lyrics to “Happy Trails” by Dale Evans Rogers

Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin’ until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we’re together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.
Happy trails to you, ’till we meet again.

Some trails are happy ones,
Others are blue.
It’s the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here’s a happy one for you.

Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin’ until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we’re together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.

Happy trails to you, ’till we meet again.

Alternate Religious Verse:

Happy trails to you, it’s great to say “hello”.
And to share with you the trail we’ve come to know.
It started on the day that we met Jesus,
He came into our hearts and then he freed us.
For a life that’s true, a happy trail to you.

  1. Thank you! Never heard the religious version before. I’m betting that a lot of people who decry the behaviors of children these days wish they could enforce RR club rules. Actually, most of them are good common sense.

  2. for Phyllis: Agree. I remember feeling very much a part of the RR club, and taking the rules very seriously.

  3. I loved Roy too. When I had the chicken pox I dreamed that Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey and the Cisco Kid would come and see me and we would solve the problems of the world……a summit Ha Ha

  4. for Betsy: We felt we had real relationships with these people. Not sure if kids today feel the same personal connection to what they see on the screen.
