November 2018: My Hopes for a Blue Wave

As the Trump presidency grinds on and Republicans in red states are emboldened — Ohio is considering a law that would not only ban all abortions for any reason but allow doctors who perform abortions and women who receive them to be charged with murder — I pin a lot of hope on a blue wave election.

Then I find sobering articles which tell how hard it’s going to be, because of the extreme gerrymandering that followed the Tea Party victories in 2010.

Democracy has ceased to work when compromise becomes a dirty word, and we struggle to yank public policy from one extreme to the opposite extreme depending on which party prevails.

I guess I’m ready to say it. Democracy has ceased to work.
