Having a small bottle of hot sauce on the table for breakfast is a Pacific Northwest thing, and as I now use less salt, I use hot sauce to add zip to my morning eggs. At the Hyatt in Boston, I had to ask.
Most of the servers were Hispanic, and when they saw me put hot sauce on my omelette, they came up to me and began speaking Spanish. How did I like my breakfast? How did I like the hotel? Was it my first trip to Boston? How did I come to speak Spanish with a real accent, like a native speaker?
Would you call it a cultural marker, eating hot sauce on your eggs? I think I would. 🙂
