The Moral Smugness Behind the Tax Plan

Shafting the poor and middle class — the majority, in other words — has become a feature, not a byproduct, of Republican tax planning.

The reason is simple: a moral smugness that says God rewards people who are thrifty and industrious. So if God isn’t rewarding you and you’re poor, that means by definition you aren’t thrifty and industrious, and why should rich people like the Koch brothers bail you out?

There’s lots about this tax bill that I find abhorrent and in conflict with what I thought were basic American values. But the cruel judgmental attitude toward people struggling to get ahead takes the cake.

  1. for Katie: Agree. The presentation of what’s in the tax bill has been an outright lie from beginning to end.
