Jane Mayer has done really ground-breaking investigative journalism, much of which ended up in her book Dark Money. The book traces the outsized influence on U.S. elections of billionaire families like the Koch brothers and the Mercers, who unleashed their economic might to pull the country in a libertarian direction following the Citizen’s United Supreme Court decision.
Now Mayer has a long piece in the New Yorker, which shows why the threat to our democracy is so much bigger than Bannon, or Trump. This isn’t a quick read, so settle in. But it’s essential context for the day-to-day chaos of the Trump presidency.
