Mitch McConnell is supposed to be the great defender of the Senate as an institution. He gave up that mantle, in my view, when he used raw power over his Republican caucus to deny President Obama’s appointee for the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, any consideration. Now, with the health care bill, McConnell’s behavior is nihilistic. Pass something, anything, just so Republicans can claim a win. The debacle happening on the Senate floor has nothing to do with actual health care that all of us require in order to stay healthy. The debacle has to do with winning at all costs — and I’d say, Republicans in Congress don’t even know or care what they are going to win. They just want to shove something over the finish line.
This is how degraded our democracy has become. The fall from grace from the Obama era is stunning.
