Sufficient as an explanation, for me, of why Trump sends out these vicious tweets is that he is thin-skinned, vicious man who gets high on humiliating others. But there’s another explanation, which I think is secondary. The Republican Congress is grappling with health care reform, Syria, Russian interference in our election, escalation of our troop levels in Afghanistan, tax reform, a deadline for raising the debt ceiling — a lot of difficult issues. Trump can’t string three coherent sentences together on any of these complex topics unless he’s reading from a teleprompter, and then he typically disavows what he’s read within 24 or 48 hours with a new set of tweets. He can’t talk about any of the policy matters without quickly revealing his ignorance — shocking even Republican legislators with the emptiness of his mind. He can, on the other hand, spend hours and even days belittling, mocking, savaging — all of that is effortless for him. Instinctively, he talks about what he can talk about easily and tries to distract us from the large universe of things about which he knows nothing.
If anyone has a different theory to explain his attack tweets, I’m glad to hear it.
