While the rest of us are worried about the future of our democracy, or about ISIS blowing up a plane via someone’s computer, or the new outbreak of Ebola in Africa, Erendira Wallenda — of the famed Wallenda tightrope walking family — is planning to hang by her teeth from a helicopter over Niagara Falls. The Niagara County legislature, seeing this as a great tourism opportunity, has appropriated $35,000 to cover costs.
Niagara County, not far from my old hometown of Rochester in Monroe County, is a pretty depressed area — despite recent signs of trendy bar and restaurant life in downtown Buffalo. In an economically depressed community, a performance like that of Ms. Wallenda is shaping up to be a big thing.
I offer this as a moment of lightness, just when you think the world is coming to an end.
