Signs of spring abound in Seattle: more sun, warmer temps, trees leafing out, flowers up and blooming. But the biggest harbinger of the fullness of spring and summer is the return to Seattle of cruise ships headed for Alaska. Norwegian — the one that docks just below my balcony — isn’t back yet, but Holland American and Celebrity are in port in Magnolia. I think it’s still pretty cold in Alaska, but these early spring and late fall cruises are priced accordingly and attract the more hardy and price-conscious travelers.
Just in front of the cruise ships are some of the commercial ocean-going fishing boats. By size contrast, you can see how huge the newest cruise ships have become.
I love cruise season in Seattle, because of the way it ups the ante on people-watching as I walk along Puget Sound. Really, cruise ships attract the most eclectic group of travelers you can imagine.
