Manley Pointer is the fictional name of the traveling Bible salesman who lures Hulga into the hay loft and steals her wooden leg, leaving the young woman stranded and completely dependent on someone coming to look for her. The name of the story is Good Country People. Manley, as you can imagine, is anything but good.
Manley Pointer is also the name of the young peacock at Andalusia Farm; there is also a peahen, much older. The birds are kept in a wire mesh enclosure, unlike during Flannery’s time when there were 40 or more, screeching and roaming the grounds and eating Regina O’Connor’s carefully tended flowers.
Manley obliged us by fanning his gorgeous tail, which made quite the welcome.
