More Memory Hill Cemetery

Phyllis is my kind of traveler; open to meandering from one thing to the next, based on what piqued our curiosity. After looking at Regina and Edward’s flat tombstones, we decided to see if Cousin Katie was buried in Memory Hill as well. We found the Cline family plot, and there was a Katherine Cline, but by date she was Regina’s sister, not Flannery’s wealthy Cousin Katie. Katie was a Cline by marriage, her father’s name was John Flannery. I suspect she’s buried in the Flannery plot, elsewhere.

We also found a large empty expanse in the center of the cemetery where the dead from Georgia State Hospital for the Criminally Insane were buried, the place marked with a wood sign but no gravestones. The facility housed — or warehoused — “the criminally insane, mentally feeble, and epileptic”. Who knows how many hundreds, or thousands, of bodies are interred in that largely unmarked space.

Nameless inmates.
