Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes

I don’t watch much TV and I’m an average movie-goer, so I’m not sure what prompted me to turn on the Golden Globes on Sunday night. Meryl Streep was being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and I love her and her body of work — so I did want to watch long enough to see that.

She used her brief acceptance speech to do a takedown of Donald Trump in the strongest, most passionate terms — even though she’d mostly lost her voice and her strained vocal chords made her delivery more effortful than usual. No matter. She stood up and made the point. Like her friend Michelle Obama,  Streep ripped the facade from this despicable man with short, choice, pointed sentences. We’re going to need to hear their voices over and over during the next four years. Bravo, Meryl — one of your best and most important performances.

  1. I too watched the go Golden Globe Awards. I agree, the highlight of the night was, truly, Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech. She accurately and articulately described the serious concerns about and poor role modeling of the incoming president. She ended with her request that principled press are essential for keeping The power of the executive office in check. With so much support for Ms Streep’s perspective, I continue towonder how this happened to our country.

  2. for Katie and Phyllis: I take it as a sign of how dead-on-target Streep’s message hit in Trump world that Donald started tweeting trash right away, and KellyAnne Conway did her smarmy “so disappointed” routine. Honestly, these two deserve each other. I can’t fathom how this has happened to our country either. Yesterday’s New York Times reported that Trump stalwarts “couldn’t care less” about Russian hacking into our election. Dimwits.
