Red states — of which there are more now than I can remember in all my years of voting — used to suppress minority votes via poll taxes, bogus literacy tests, and when all else failed, through lynching and other direct forms of physical violence. Now they do it with more sophisticated voter suppression techniques.
The national mood, as fomented by Trump, really is back to a pre-civil rights era. I won’t live long enough to see us climb back out again, but I will celebrate and rejoice at every step of the beginning of that march. I’m not yet ready to give up on Dr. King’s moral arc bending toward justice.
