Power is seductive, so even though Romney criticized Trump in the harshest terms during the primary, Romney is now groveling for the job of Secretary of State.
There are two schools of thought making the rounds among Republicans re serving in the Trump administration. One says that the best people must step up, no matter their revulsion for Trump and everything he stands for, in order to save the country. I take a different stance, along with the Republican foreign policy establishment who has said so far they will not serve. I think when you work for a corrupt enterprise, you eventually become tainted by corruption — even if it’s not your own.
Trump is morally vacuous, he’s devoted to enriching himself and his family, and he’s already said that president by definition can’t have a conflict of interest. Richard Nixon believed all of that too, and it didn’t work out so well.
A word to the wise, specifically squeaky clean Mormon Mitt: join this bloviating con man, and the “squeaky clean” part of your legacy is immediately at risk.
If the Trump administration does go down, I don’t think it will be because of civil rights violations. Trump voters, and the Republican Congress, have already shown themselves willing to overlook almost anything — especially when done to vulnerable populations. I think it will be because of an ethics violation so egregious that even Republicans can’t turn away.
Mitt, you don’t want to be around when that day comes.
